Italia Shooters scored two quick goals following a scoreless first half at The Soccer Centre when Frank Bruno found the net at the 52nd minute mark and Rob Black five minutes later against Caribbean Selects in an all-International Division encounter. Maxime Dorneval scored the lone Caribbean goal at 81 minutes.
At the Ontario Soccer Centre in Vaughan, Vaughan Italia Shooters hosted the new team called Caribbean Selects. The Caribbean Selects are one of two new teams in the new CSL’s International Division, the other being the Serbian White eagles.
While the Serbian White Eagles are yet to lose a game, the Caribbean Selects are yet to win a game, and this did not change on Sunday vs the surprisingly struggling Vaughan Italia Shooters. So far in 2006, the Shooters do not resemble the 2005 league Champions and runner up League Cup Champions that they are.
The game started with some good ball control and possession by the Shooters. There were some great scoring chances by forward Evan Milward and Joey Todaro who both had their shots go wide or off the goal post. As the game wore on, the Caribbean Selects got back some of their composure and at about the 25 minute mark struck a hard shot that beat the Shooters goalie and if it was not for the goal post, it could easily have been a 1-0 lead for the Selects.
The first half ended 0 – 0. The Shooters were not looking very impressive against a very young and inexperienced Selects Team. For the second half, the Shooters made three changes and finally at the 52nd mark of the second half, midfielder Frank Bruno scored on a header from a perfect cross from striker Stalin Cardenas. The game went back and forth and again the Caribbean Selects pressed and this time at the 70th minute mark a hard shot beat the Shooter goalie only to go off the cross bar and out of bounds. At the 76 minute mark, the Shooters finally got an insurance goal as Robert Black scored another header giving the Shooters a 2— 0 lead.
Finally at the 81 minute mark, the Caribbean Selects sent forward Maxime Dorneval off on a breakaway. He deeked passed the Shooter goalie and made the game 2 – 1 and that is how it ended. The next big test for the Shooters will come this Sunday when they play Toronto Croatia at home. This will be not only a good test for the Shooters but a revenge match as it was the Shooters who knocked off Croatia at least year’s semi final Cup game. Kick off is at 7:00pm.
